2020

The PLAGUE!!!

2020 is a year we would all like to forget about (and as we write this, it still isn't over) and we did not preserve very much.

Early in May we went out picking Ramps - Wild Leeks - and prepared them serveral different ways. We made Pickled Ramps, we made Ramp Pesto, We canned the Ramp Bulbs and we froze the Ramp Leaves.

Unfortunately, none of it tasted very good. Ramps are fine fresh, but not preserved, at least not by any method we tried. So, they are probably off the site permanently.

Tally for 2020

  • Asparagus, Pickled - 5 10-oz jars
    Asparagus Soup - 7 quarts
    Giardiniera - 14 half-pints
    Peaches - 19 quarts
    Raspberry Preserves - 12 half-pints
    Three Bean Salad - 13 half-pints

Story of 2020

June 4, 2020
  • Pickled Asparagus — 5 10-oz jars
  • I made a rookie mistake here. Three of the five are extra hot – dried crushed jalapeño – and I forgot which ones!
June 6, 2020
  • Asparagus Soup — 7 quarts
  • Fresh asparagus is almost impossible to store...pickled and soup are the only ways I know. Fresh from our friend at Bolt's Farm .
August 1, 2020
  • Raspberry Preserves — 12 half-pints
  • This year we juiced the berries before we made the jam so ... jelly instead!
September 2, 2020
  • Three Bean Salad — 13 half-pints
  • Always a favorite. This is an easy addition to any meal.
  • Giardiniera — 14 half-pints
  • New last year, now a staple! Did not add any heat this year, just straight vegetables.
September 3, 2020
  • Peaches — 19 quarts
  • Man oh man did we miss these! We love peaches and now we have a good supply. Oh, they are delicious too!
