This is a musical, the words and music were written by Stephen Sondheim.

This is one of our favorite musicals ever, almost bordering on Grand Opera. The characters, the story, and most especially the music are just wonderful. It is a must see.

However, this movie version is not. Not wonderful, not a must see, not very good at all. First and foremost, the singing is not good. Why on earth would you cast in the lead an actor who really cannot sing? We know this musical by heart, we can hear every song in our head. But we cannot recall a single example of that from this film.

A great cast, a great director, a great musical ... a really bad movie. Spare yourself and go see your local high school perform this musical. It will be more enjoyable.
