Synopsis: A successful black woman discovers that her birth mother is a underprivileged white woman, but the woman denies it. As emotions run high, everyone's secrets are exposed.

Cynthia [Brenda Blethyn] seems to live at the peak of emotional exhaustion. She smokes more than anyone I've ever seen and never seems to relax. What a surprise to her, then, when a young woman shows up claiming to be her daughter.

The fact is initially confusing however it all becomes clear, The reactions of Cynthia, her daughter Roxanne [Claire Rushbrook], her brother [Timothy Spall] are a marvel to watch.

This is an excellent movie, with a marvelous cast and was written and directed by Mike Leigh and Blethyn gives one of the great performances. Most highly recommended.
