Synopsis: A mother left alone with her child in the deep winter of upstate New York looks for ways to keep them all alive with her gambling husband gone.

This is an incredibly excellent film. Ray Eddy (Melissa Leo) has been abandoned by her wayward and gambling husband. In attempting to find a way to survive she crosses paths with Lila Littlewolf (Misty Upham).

Littlewolf's plan is to bring people into the United States by driving them across the frozen St. Lawrence river. Figuring that as the Mohawk reservation spans the river, there actually is no border and no law is being broken.

Desperate for the income, Eddy agrees and the two embark on their career. The true gem of this story is that of the lives of Ray and Lila, the difficulties they face to survive in a world unfriendly and cold. Both Upham and Leo give excellent performances, as does McDermott as T.J., Ray's son. However, it must be said that Melissa Leo clearly makes this movie the five star it is.
