Synopsis: A fiesty lawyer helps a young girl challenge the tradition of abducting brides.

An Ethiopian custom is for a man in picking out a bride-to-be, abducts her, takes her virginity, and then marries her. The title of the movie, Difret, can be translated from Arabic to mean "the act of being raped". This shows us the attitude towards this custom by the women in the story, and the makers of the movie.

Tizita Hagere plays 14-year-old Hirut Assefa who, while going home from school, is abducted and raped by a man who wishes her to be his wife. The following day, Hirut has an opportunity to escape and return to her parents. This is contrary to tradition and trouble ensues.

Maron Getnet plays lawyer Meaza Ashenafi who takes on Hirut's case and fights this custom. The movie then follows the challenge all the way to the Ethiopian Supreme Court. Based on a true story, the tale is very interesting. The movie itself is a little clumsy in its editing and acting, but the story is good enough to keep your interest.
