This was a fascinating film. In a digital world in which all have reliquinshed privacy for security, a murder occurs. The police are unable to solve it. Usually they would access the visual memories of the deceased and be able to see who killed them.
Sal Frieland [Owen], the detective in charge of the case, cannot do this. The visual memories digitally stored in the Ether have been hacked. Instead of recording what the deceased should have seen, the victim's system is broken into and they begin to see out of the killer's eyes. So instead of recording who killed them their record is of their own death. Additionally, the digital record of who was present has been altered and so it appears they died alone.
This hacking causes Frieland to recall an incident that occurred as he was arriving at the crime scene. He was, as usual, reading the digital outputs identifying each person he saw. One woman [Seyfried], though, did not have a digital identification. Sal took this to simply be a temporary error, now he wonders if this was something more.
Following is the story of who is who and what is going on, and be prepared for some unexpected twists.
